Joella Jean Mahoney Exhibition

May 1 @ 10:00 am - May 31 @ 5:00 pm

Long-time Sedona Arts Center artist, Joella Jean Mahoney will be celebrated posthumously with this retrospective and sale of her work.  Joella Jean Mahoney was a committed artist since early childhood. Mahoney was a Professor of Art Emerita, University of La Verne where she began developing the Art Department in 1964. She held a B.A. in Art from Northern Arizona University and an MFA in painting from Claremont Graduate University. Mahoney was known for her dramatic, large-scale landscapes in oil. Even though she developed a flower series, a figure series, and a horse series, the canyon landscape of the Colorado Plateau became the major motif of her paintings. These landscapes contain all the elements of her huge originality; the spontaneous brush strokes, the inventive shapes, lambent color, and monumental scale of work and vision. Mahoney’s distinctive style that bridges realism and abstraction uses color and structure to share with the viewer the spiritual content of experiencing the miracle of nature and life. Presented in partnership with National Museum of Women in the Arts – AZ Committee, more than 20 of Joella’s works will be available for viewing and sale.
