Description
“Flight Over the Grand Canyon” by Mary Helsaple
The Grand Canyon is one gigantic crack in the earth, with peaks and valleys of arid scrub and thorn plants. When one is at the bottom looking up, one feels like a beetle in a bell jar. Yet thousands of small birds and insects, including hummingbirds, have no hesitation to fly over and through it. They find refuge in this scar on earth’s crust. Mostly unseen by hikers, the Broadtail Hummingbird that weighs less than a sugar packet is one brave opportunist who makes this odyssey every year.
