Florence, Italy was established in 59 BC by Julius Caesar as a settlement for his veteran soldiers. The name means “The Flourishing”. Florence is concidered to be the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and Florentine design. In the historic quarter of Santa Croce there is the Basillica of the Holy Cross which dates from 1294. This cross was inspired by the magnificent high alter in the Basillica.,
