Description
The book of Kells holds a unique place in history. Its wealth of Hiberno-Saxon illumination is extra-ordinary. The large manuscrpit of the four Gospels was probably written and illuminated on the Isle of Iona in that early 9th Century. After a series of Viking raids, the monks fled the monastrey in 807 AD. They took the unfinished manuscrpit with them to the monastery of Kells, in the County of Meath, Ireland where it was finished. The design for this cross was adapted from a gravestone found at the old abbey at Kells.
