Description
The Wachau Valley of the Danube River is rich in History. There is evidence of Neolithic settlements, Celtic wine growing, bronze and iron smelting, Roman Forts, and medival monastaries and castles. Perched on a cliff 300 feet above the Danube, are ruins of a Burgruine Aggstein castle built in 1181. A crude bronze cross was found in the ruins of the castle. The origin of the cross is unknown but it shows Celtic influence. This is a copy of the cross.
